Space Nursing
EASA Commons 2023 - Participant
Xantho implemented an intensive 2-week educational architectural workshop. During the workshop, 14 participants worked together to contribute to critical-architectural discourse on the moral and physical abandonment of urban spaces.
During the first week, almost 20 abandoned buildings and sites in Sheffield were visited. Participants learned about the Space Nursing practice, its methodology and academic context. During the second week, participants and workshop facilitators created experimental architectural interventions in abandoned spaces.
The workshop concluded with a presentation of the participants’ interventions and public tours of abandoned sites in Sheffield. The public tours attracted over 200 participants and were captured by the group’s photographers, with a particular focus on the “Cornish Works” territory in the rapidly gentrified historic area of Kelham Island.
Amidst a wasteland of broken bricks, a small path was cleared. The landscape intervention guides visitors through the material lifetime of Cornish Works, highlighting the beauty of its monumental arches along with the rubble left behind. The path ends at a small viewing platform where one can experience the ruderal plants taking over and wonder, what will come next in the building’s story?
